Finally I have the pleasure of reviewing a movie for you guys the day it comes out. I am going to add one new category to this review because it did something unique, like the first one.
Story- I'm going to do something else different and include the synopsis that is posted on IMDb and other websites and then give the actual story summary: "After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry's hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the Yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor - finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World's Best Lover." This is one of the best things I've ever read. Now for the legitimate story, Wade is hot off of getting revenge on Francis, and is back with his girlfriend Vanessa. He is trotting around the world, killing contracts and getting paid. When he encounters, along with the X-Men, a mutant by the name of Russel, who is being hunted by Cable. Wade decides to take matters into his own hands and protect this kid from being harmed. I liked this story just a bit more than the first because the backstory was out of the way so the action kicks off immediately.
Cinematography/Props- The cinematography in this movie was great. Although it takes place in an urban setting, they still get good looking shots. I especially love the usage of the camera as a personal view, like when blood splatters on the camera a la John Wick, or in one of the first scenes when he runs and jumps into the car, and the camera captures it from inside. Also the in-between type scenes with the overexposure of light represented what they were going for well. I do love the costume choices they went with in this movie. One of the X Force members, Shatterstar, reminded me a bit of another character, Gambit, and I liked the new take on Domino, since in the comics she has her face fully painted/ a different color. One cool little touch that I noticed is that toward the end (no spoilers) is that Deadpool's suit gets covered in ash, making it look like the black variant of his suit that is his X Force outfit.
Acting- Since there are a lot of stars in this movie I can't go over everyone, but just trust me when I say everyone is great. There's also a fun little "cameo" if you will with a patron of Weasel's (TJ Miller) bar with an amazing fourth wall breaking comment by Wade (Ryan Reynolds) about his lines. So of course Ryan Reynolds is first, and this man is a true gem. He gives this role his all and you can tell he truly enjoys making these movies as much as people enjoy watching them. He has all of the fourth wall breaks and amazing references one would come to expect from Deadpool. TJ Miller again is amazing comic relief and gets a tad bit more screentime in this one. I hate to gloss over them, but the actors/actresses that portray Blind Al, Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Pandhu and Vanessa all did amazing. Also I won't spoil it but the surprise reveal of the "true" villain in the movie took me by surprise in a great way. Russel (Julian Dennison) was actually really funny as well, and his "prison purse" (you'll know what this means once you see it) was a running gag that was funny every time. He also had his moments of emotion, plus I love accents and that added to the performance. Domino (Zazie Beets) was a standout as well, and I really hope they expand on her character in the next movie (presumably and hopefully there will be at least one more, might as well round off a trilogy if anything, despite the fun quip from the trailer "if you stop at two, ya killed it") because she is a pretty recurring role in the comics. Finally, Cable aka Josh Brolin was brooding yet brought that human touch as Schwarzenegger did in T2. The chemistry he and Reynolds had onscreen was great, and Brolin sure is riding the success train with his run as Thanos and now as Cable.
Directing- David Leitch was the director for this film, and also one of my favorite movies in the last decade, John Wick. His credit in the beginning of the movie is amazing as such, and I love this dude's style. He really gets how to direct action movies, and is good at keeping the pacing going. Not much more to say than bravo, and he really was a great asset to this production. It's ironic that I liked John Wick 2 more than the 1st (I still love both) and now the same thing goes for Deadpool, after much thought from me, and the director of this movie also directed John Wick.
Soundtrack/Audio- I feel like the soundtrack is a big part of these movies, just like the Guardians films. There's always that nice balance of OST music and the licensed music that most of the time adds to the comedic elements of the movie. There's also a super good semi-remix reprisal by the musician behind the Deadpool Rap in the first movie, TeamHeadKick. Overall, fantastic soundtrack as one would come to expect from a movie of this caliber. Also one cool little fun fact is this is the first film score to get a parental advisory label on it for explicit content. Only Deadpool my friends.
Marketing- I had to include this category because whoever is in charge of the different facets of marketing for these movies is one of the biggest geniuses in the business. For starters, and something I cannot praise enough, is the fact that the trailers do not spoil any of the gags in the movie. I've almost stopped watching all trailers for upcoming movies I know I'll want to see because they either spoil plot details or ruin funny jokes. Thankfully they put different punchlines in the movie so you get genuine laughs that weren't from the trailer. Another mark for the marketing team is the different televised stunts and promos that they've advertised, but there's way too many to talk about in this review so just Google the amazing marketing stunts. One final thing I just found out yesterday that I had to mention is Fox rebranded some of their Blu-Rays at Walmart with Deadpool spoof covers, which is hilarious. They took the amazing marketing from the first and upped their game even more somehow. Kudos to them.
Final Verdict- A+. Honestly, thinking back on it I didn't really have any problems with this movie. Thankfully I didn't have an issue of overhyping it like I did with Kingsman 2, and I feel overall it improved on the first. Definitely worth the time and money, go see it!
