The Controversy of Art

So I had an epiphany the other day, I could make YouTube videos about this stuff but thought this might be a better outlet since it is along the lines with movie/tv reviews, this section will be related to rants or other in depth explanations about things I’ve recently watched.

This first one is going to be about the Netflix series Insatiable. Now before I start to discuss the controversy surrounding the show if somehow you haven’t heard, I just wanna say I probably wouldn’t have watched this show if Debby Ryan wasn’t starting cuz she's my girl, been a fan of hers dating back alllll the way to Suite Life on Deck.

The show is about Patty, who is in high school and is overweight, and one day she asks out her dream crush in a gas station, who promptly rejects her because she clearly has "no chance" due to her weight. She then goes outside to eat, and a homeless man approaches her and berates her about her weight as well, so she punches him in the face, who in return punches her in the face, breaking her jaw and enabling her to lose a ton of weight. She then goes on a mission to prove everyone she is more than just "Fatty Patty", a moniker put upon her by all of her bullies. This wouldn't surprise me if it happened in real life because high school kids are in general the worst, and extremely hurtful.

The controversy stems from the fact that they say the show is "fat shaming" which couldn't be farther from the truth. She does wear a somewhat tacky fat suit for like 2 minutes, but what else would they do, use terrible CGI like The Rock in Central Intelligence? This show is a dark comedy, satirical at some points, but at no point is it explicitly fat shaming. Most critics of the show probably just read the synopsis or watched only the first episode because it gets a lot deeper and more meaningful. The fact that this show tackles a ton of subjects, a big one being sexuality, because there are two sets of people who don't really realize their feelings for the opposite sex truly, and shows their journey through that. It also briefly deals in suicide and stalking, not in a distasteful way though. I hate it when certain things in this medium are picked apart for being a bigger deal than they should be, like the cut end credit scene from Deadpool 2, that after seeing in the extended cut was absolutely nothing to get worked up over. People are just oversensitive or look for things to nitpick for causes that aren't being helped by scrutinizing art, which is what movies or television are. Sorry for the extended rant but I figured this stuff should be noted because in the instance of Debby Ryan since she's the main actress in the show, should not get a bunch of hate for a show she is acting in, and even if she did have a bigger part in the writing of the show, it's still ridiculous. Hopefully if you watch the show you enjoy it for what it is, entertainment.
